This project is a crucial development for Nordic security and logistics, as the new wagons will enable the transportation of heavy defence equipment by rail. VR FleetCare will handle the entire project, from design through to manufacturing and delivery, ensuring the wagons meet the specific needs of the Norwegian and Swedish Defence Forces.
The initial phase of the project includes the design and approval of the wagon type, followed by the series production of ten wagons, with an option for up to 110 more. Otso Ikonen, VR FleetCare’s Senior Vice President of Maintenance, expressed the importance of the cooperation, noting it marks a significant milestone for Finnish wagon manufacturing and export.
The wagons will be specially designed to transport heavy NATO equipment and will be built to withstand the Arctic T2 climate zone, which presents unique challenges, such as snow and ice accumulation. This design is particularly significant as there was previously no heavy-duty wagon approved for Arctic conditions.
With extensive experience in Arctic conditions and heavy transport, VR FleetCare is well-equipped to meet the project’s demands. The wagons will also be compatible with Finland’s rail gauge, further enhancing Nordic security of supply.
Manufactured at VR FleetCare’s Pieksämäki workshop, the new 6-axle wagons are designed for durability, ease of maintenance, and a long lifecycle. VR FleetCare’s Pieksämäki facility is capable of producing multiple wagon series simultaneously, supporting the company’s broad expertise in freight wagons and other transport solutions.
