The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) has completed its first ever fighter aircraft deployment to Europe in its 71-year history, with two F-15 fighter jets arriving at RAF Coningsby as part of the “Atlantic Eagles” mission. The operation highlights growing defence cooperation between the United Kingdom and Japan and underscores the global nature of security.

The deployment, which runs from 14 September to 1 October 2025, involves F-15 fighter aircraft supported by KC-767, KC-46A and C-2 transport planes, along with around 180 personnel. As part of the mission, the JASDF is visiting allied air bases in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.

“This marks our first fighter deployment to Europe in the 71-year history of the Koku-Jieitai (Japan Air Self-Defense Force). We have named this mission ‘Atlantic Eagles,’ symbolising our F-15 jets spreading their wings across the Atlantic,” said General Morita Takehiro, Chief of Staff of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

Air Chief Marshal Smyth, Chief of the Air Staff for the Royal Air Force, said: “The arrival of your fighters on UK soil is not only a milestone for the Koku-Jieitai, but also a powerful symbol of how far our partnership has advanced. This is not simply a visit, it is a demonstration of operational trust and shared purpose.”

The mission follows recent initiatives, including the UK’s Carrier Strike Group deployment to the Indo-Pacific and joint training exercises between RAF and JASDF aircraft near Japan. Last month, both nations’ defence ministers released their first joint statement recognising stronger ties and deeper cooperation.

Military leaders emphasised that Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security are closely linked, with the deployment aimed at deepening mutual understanding and advancing shared defence goals. The Atlantic Eagles mission marks the beginning of broader collaboration between the Royal Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in support of peace, stability and shared values.
