German drone maker STARK said on 13 February that it had opened a research and development hub in Ukraine and a regional office in Greece, expanding its industrial presence across Europe. The company said the move marked a shift towards sustained defence across the continent amid rising demand for its one-way-effectors and unmanned maritime systems.

The new Ukrainian facility will comprise a 2,000 square metre site designed to support more than 200 specialists, focusing on research and development, integration, training and support to accelerate the transition from design to production. STARK said it has worked with Ukrainian experts since its inception and will also establish a local production site to use domestic supply chains and enable faster system updates as battlefield conditions and countermeasures evolve.

Chief executive Uwe Horstmann said: “STARK is becoming a key pillar and partner in the defence of Europe, with local defence tech R&D and production across the continent. By leveraging innovation from the frontline and across Europe, we are helping ensure that proven unmanned systems can be produced at speed and kept relevant as operational needs evolve.”

Maksym Cherkis, chief operating officer of STARK Ukraine, said: “Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has fundamentally changed Europe’s security landscape. Deterrence depends on defence innovation as well as sustained production.”
