The Norwegian Defence Material Agency has signed a contract worth approximately NOK 410 million with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for a sensor upgrade of the Norwegian Navy’s Skjold-class corvettes. The agreement was signed at Haakonsvern by Stein Håvard Bergstad, Head of Maritime Capabilities at the agency.

The upgrade includes modernisation of fire control radars and the delivery of new electro-optical sensors for four of the six Skjold-class vessels, along with integration into the existing combat system supplied by Kongsberg. Saab AB will act as subcontractor for the radar upgrade, while Safran will deliver the new electro-optical sensors.

According to the agency, the upgrade forms part of a broader modernisation of the Skjold class, following earlier improvements to propulsion systems, communications and the combat management system that links sensors and weapons. With the radar and electro-optical enhancements, the modernisation of the vessels is now being completed.

“This contract is an important contribution to ensuring that the Skjold-class remains a relevant and combat-capable asset in the years ahead. The upgrade enhances precision, detection capability and endurance, and constitutes a key element in the overall modernisation of the vessels,” said Stein Håvard Bergstad.

Kjetil Reiten Myhra, Executive Vice President at Kongsberg, said: “We are pleased to continue the work with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency on the Skjold class to support and strengthen the fleet’s operational ability and availability.”

The radar upgrade is intended to ensure that the Skjold class can continue to deliver precise fire with its 76 mm gun in the years ahead. The new electro-optical sensors will improve the vessels’ ability to detect and track targets at sea and in the air, including smaller and fast-moving objects such as drones.

The measures are also expected to enhance navigational safety in demanding conditions and provide improved support for search and rescue operations. The project will start immediately, with the first electro-optical sensor system planned for installation in 2026 and completion of testing on the first vessel scheduled for early 2027, followed by further deliveries and installations through 2027 and 2028.
