The planned procurement reflects concerns over how quickly precision-guided munitions can be depleted during modern conflicts. Under the new plan, total U.S. inventories of JASSM missiles are expected to increase to around 11,000 units.
The acquisition programme is structured under a multi-year procurement plan covering production lots 22 through 26. Annual deliveries are expected to increase rapidly before stabilising later in the programme.
The total value of procurement under the planning framework is estimated at $20.2 billion. This figure includes both baseline funding and advance procurement orders.
For fiscal year 2026, the Air Force plans to purchase 381 missiles for $818.1 million. Procurement levels are scheduled to increase significantly in the following year.
In fiscal year 2027, planned purchases are expected to rise to 821 missiles worth $1.997 billion. That would represent a 144% increase compared with the previous year.
The Air Force plans to acquire 896 missiles in fiscal year 2028. Procurement levels for fiscal years 2029, 2030 and 2031 are expected to remain at roughly 860 missiles annually.
The AGM-158 JASSM is designed to strike fortified and high-value targets from beyond the range of advanced air defence systems. It remains a key weapon for long-range strike missions.
Newer versions of the missile include improved targeting capabilities. They also offer greater resistance to electronic jamming and the ability to retarget during flight.
