Australia completes first flight of domestically designed solid rocket motor, advancing sovereign tactical missile propulsion capability

Australia has completed the first successful flight test of a fully domestically designed and manufactured advanced solid rocket motor, advancing efforts to establish a sovereign guided weapons capability. The 100kg-class Koonibba Rising 3.0 motor was launched at the Koonibba Test Range near Ceduna in South Australia.

The test demonstrated Australian industry’s ability to design, manufacture, integrate and test rocket motor technologies relevant to future tactical missile systems. Southern Launch, a South Australian industry partner, conducted the flight test.

Post-flight analysis confirmed that the Koonibba Rising 3.0 motor performed as designed throughout the mission, according to Australia’s Department of Defence. The test also demonstrated real-time monitoring of the flight vehicle and rocket motor while allowing the vehicle to be recovered for inspection and data validation.

The motor incorporates technologies and design features required for high-performance military applications. Solid rocket motors are widely used in missile systems because they offer high energy density and can remain stored for extended periods while being ready for launch at short notice.

Koonibba Rising 3.0 was developed through the Advanced Rocket Motor Technology Demonstrator Program, a partnership between the Defence Science and Technology Group and Thales Australia. The programme also brings together Australian industry partners involved in component design and manufacturing.

The latest flight follows the successful static firing of the larger-scale DRACO solid rocket motor at Woomera in February 2026. The Department of Defence said the two developments demonstrate a pathway for domestic development, manufacture, testing and evaluation of future rocket motors.

“This is a significant achievement for Australia’s defence industry and a major step forward in our ability to design, develop and test advanced rocket motor and missile system technologies right here in Australia. It showcases the strength of collaboration between Defence, Australian industry and research organisations in delivering cutting-edge capabilities that support our national security and sovereign industrial resilience,” Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy said.

The Australian Government said the flight test supports the development of domestic industrial capabilities required for future guided weapons technologies. The programme is focused on establishing Australian expertise across the full process of rocket motor development, from design and manufacturing through integration, testing and evaluation.
