The upgraded Abrams fleet brings enhanced lethality, protection, mobility, and communication capabilities to Australia’s defence forces. “These new main battle tanks are an essential part of our combined arms fighting system,” said Major General Richard Vagg, Head Land Capability, adding that the tanks will empower land forces to secure strategic positions and deliver long-range strike as part of an integrated defence system.
Major General Vagg emphasised that these tanks offer unparalleled protection, precision, and mobility on diverse terrain, providing soldiers with the highest chance of mission success and safe return. He acknowledged the United States’ significant role in delivering these advanced capabilities through the Foreign Military Sales programme, noting, “It is a true reflection of the deep and enduring alliance we share.”
To support the new fleet, the Army is investing in existing infrastructure and additional support systems across the country. Major General Jason Blain, Head Land Systems, stated that local industry will play a crucial role in maintaining the Abrams M1A2s, requiring specialised maintenance, repair, and overhaul capabilities at key locations.
These maintenance services will be based at sites where the tanks will primarily operate, including Puckapunyal and Bandiana in Victoria and Townsville in Queensland. Additionally, simulation training systems from industry partners like Thomas Global Systems Australia, Thales Australia, and Universal Motion Simulation will support soldier readiness and skill development.
Fourteen of the new Abrams tanks are expected to arrive at the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Townsville by the end of 2024, with field training on these advanced vehicles scheduled to begin early in 2025.
