Austria considers purchase of M-346 jets from Leonardo, says Tanner

By Defence Industry Europe

Austria is taking steps towards acquiring new advanced jet trainers to replace its ageing fleet of Saab 105 jets, which were retired due to age-related issues. Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner has directed a review of the potential purchase of M-346 jets from the Italian company Leonardo, following an offer from the Italian Ministry of Defence. The jets are intended for both training and air defence roles, including the capability to be armed.

The initiative aligns with Austria’s long-term military planning, as outlined in the 2032+ defence plan and the annual defence report presented to Parliament.

On Tuesday, Minister Tanner instructed the General Directorate for the Presidency to examine the legal requirements for a joint procurement cooperation with Italy.

Additionally, measures have been put in place to ensure compliance with all procurement regulations.

Minister Tanner expressed her gratitude to Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto for the offer, emphasising the importance of trust and transparency in such cooperative agreements.
