In the first week, the F-39E Gripens participated in familiarisation flights, working within an operational scenario alongside foreign military air forces. They also took part in Composite Air Operations (COMAO), which are large-scale, multi-nation exercises designed to improve collaborative combat tactics.
“The squadron participated in and completed all the missions planned by the Exercise Directorate, serving as both the Allied and the Opposing Force,” said Major Aviator Vitor Bombonato, Operations Officer of the 1st GDA. This level of participation allowed the squadron to gain valuable experience in both offensive and defensive roles, critical for operational readiness.
Two COMAO missions, considered the most complex exercises in CRUZEX, were conducted in the morning. In the afternoon, the Gripen fighters undertook simpler training missions, focusing on coordination and route familiarisation within the training area.
“Throughout the week, we began with COMAO flights, which involve approximately 60 aircraft taking off in a short time frame to operate in the same scenario,” said Major Aviator Raphael Kersul, a fighter pilot with the 1st GDA. “Additionally, we conducted a few flights with a smaller number of aircraft to practise outbound and return routes to the training area, as well as the first Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat flights, where we applied tactics and used long-range missiles in simulated conditions.”
Operation CRUZEX 2024 is hosted by the FAB at the Natal Air Base, bringing together various air forces to hone their skills in complex, real-world scenarios. The training flights, which showcase both the prowess of the F-39E Gripen and the strategic expertise of FAB pilots, are set to continue until 15 November.
