As part of the agreement, Croatia will deliver 30 M-84 tanks and 30 M-80 infantry fighting vehicles from its stock to Ukraine, along with spare parts and ammunition. Germany will compensate Croatia for these contributions, reducing the cost of the Leopard tanks in return, making this exchange advantageous for all parties involved, including Ukraine.
The decision to procure up to 50 Leopard 2A8 tanks is a significant step in Croatia’s ongoing military modernisation efforts. Minister Anušić emphasised that this initiative complements other recent defence projects, such as the acquisition of HIMARS rocket systems and drones, underscoring Croatia’s commitment to reaching a defence spending target of 2% of GDP before the initially projected 2027 deadline.
Minister Pistorius praised Croatia’s proactive stance, recognising the nation as a steadfast NATO and EU partner. The ministers also discussed regional stability in Southeast Europe and Croatia’s ongoing support to Ukraine, which has received Croatian military aid totalling over EUR 200 million to date.
Minister Anušić highlighted that these defence enhancements not only support Croatia’s long-term security goals but also reinforce its role in international security frameworks. The Leopard 2A8, known for its advanced technology and resilience, will significantly bolster Croatia’s defence capabilities, completing the country’s upgraded armoury and enabling it to meet emerging security challenges.
