Canberra has picked Danish defence software company Systematic to supply the first tranche of the Australian Army's next-generation Battle Management System, a deal that formalises a working relationship the two sides have quietly built over five years of trials. The Department of Defence signed the contract on 19 June 2026, naming Systematic's SitaWare Headquarters as the platform underpinning the Army's critical command and control capability going forward.

The award sits within the broader LAND 4140 Programme, Australia’s long-running effort to modernise its Land Command, Control, Communications and Computing Capability on a continuous basis rather than through periodic, one-off upgrades. That framing matters: rather than a single procurement decision, the contract represents the latest step in an incremental modernisation drive the Army has been pursuing for years.

The relationship between Systematic and the Australian Army did not begin with a contract but with a trial. The Army first tested SitaWare Headquarters in 2021, deploying it during Exercise Talisman Sabre, the country’s largest military exercise, before extending its use across a range of subsequent activities and multinational training events.

Nikolaj Bramsen, Systematic’s chief executive, said the eventual selection reflected sustained performance under real operational conditions rather than a snap decision. “The Australian Army identified a requirement for a secure and battle-proven system,” he said. “After five years of use with a consistently strong performance, the system has contributed to the Army’s ongoing consideration of its future battle management capability.”

That track record extends well beyond Australia. SitaWare Headquarters is now used by more than 50 nations, including every member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, and in 2024 NATO adopted the system as its standard for land operations, a move that has pushed interoperability among allied forces higher up the priority list for governments evaluating their own command systems.

For Canberra, the appeal lies partly in a dynamic Gainsford’s team is keen to underline: partnering with Systematic lets Australian forces plug into that wider allied network while retaining full sovereign control over their own data, a distinction that has become increasingly important as governments grow wary of ceding control over sensitive military information to foreign software providers.

That sensitivity sits against a backdrop of rising Australian investment in command and control infrastructure, as the Australian Defence Force positions itself to operate more seamlessly across joint and coalition environments. To meet the demand that shift is generating, Systematic has been quietly building out its domestic footprint, and now employs 35 people in Australia providing local engineering, support and programme delivery.

Mark Gainsford, Vice President for Business Development at Systematic Australia, framed the requirement in blunter terms than the technical language of the contract might suggest. “The Army needs a warfighting system it can trust, operate, and deliver at speed as capability requirements evolve,” he said.

Gainsford went further, tying the procurement directly to the geopolitical climate shaping Australian defence planning. “The Australian Army knows that coalition operations are the foundation of modern warfare, particularly in a deteriorating strategic environment,” he said. “Being able to fight in that context is essential.”

With the government approval process now complete, Gainsford said Systematic sees room for the system’s use to expand well beyond this initial tranche. “We have been through a full government approval process, and we are ready to be more broadly used and integrated across the land and joint environment,” he said, adding a point he clearly regards as central to the company’s pitch: “We provide the software, but they own it, and they own the data inside it.”

That data-sovereignty argument, Systematic suggests, is resonating beyond Australia’s borders. According to the company, the same requirements driving the Army’s decision are increasingly surfacing across the wider region, pointing to further opportunities for coalition-ready command-and-control systems that let governments retain ownership of their own military data.
