The agreement was signed during CANSEC 2026, the defence exhibition recently held in Ottawa, Canada. WASS Submarine Systems is described by Fincantieri as a leader in the design and development of advanced underwater defence systems.
Under the agreement, WASS Submarine Systems and Magellan will explore opportunities for Canadian industrial participation in heavyweight torpedoes and torpedo countermeasures system capabilities. The areas of cooperation include production of components, energetic sections, subassemblies, final assembly and factory testing.
The companies will also assess maintenance and in-service support activities. Fincantieri said the cooperation is intended to contribute to the development of a sustainable and competitive industrial capability in Canada across the lifecycle of underwater defence systems.
WASS brings more than 150 years of heritage in underwater defence to the collaboration. Fincantieri said the company also brings extensive industrial and technological expertise in advanced underwater systems.
The agreement provides a basis for progressive cooperation between WASS Submarine Systems and Magellan. By combining WASS’ underwater defence expertise with Magellan’s established industrial presence in Canada, the collaboration aims to support the long-term development of sovereign underwater capabilities.
Fincantieri said the partnership is also intended to strengthen local industrial participation. The companies aim to enable sustainable in-country sustainment for underwater defence systems in Canada.
