The TP47, or SLWT (Saab Lightweight Torpedo) is an upgraded version of the TP45 type torpedo delivered by Saab Dynamics. The TP47 and TP45 torpedoes are the same size, which enables the use of the M/20 torpedo launchers, which were installed into the Hamina-class missile boats in conjunction with their overhaul, with both torpedo models.

The torpedo system was installed into the Hamina-class missile craft as part of the ongoing overhaul. The system was introduced into use with TP45 model torpedoes in 2020.
The propulsion, power supply and target homing systems of the TP47 now received have been modernized from those of the TP45. The upgrade rendered the TP47 almost soundless and faster than its predecessor, easier to control and more advanced in terms of homing in on a predetermined target.
According to Saab, originally developed for the Swedish Navy, TP47 torpedo is based on over 100 years of underwater systems experience. As a result, the best-in-class torpedo is primed for today and tomorrow’s challenges. It performs equally well in both shallow and blue water, as well as under cold, warm and brackish conditions.
TP47 boasts a fully digital homing system, wire-guided and fire-and-forget operation and adapts to various harsh hydroacoustic conditions. Launchable from multiple platforms, it will ensure your success in any environment.
The TP47 is intended specifically for anti-submarine operations, but it is effective also against surface vessels. The torpedo is capable of seeking and homing in on underwater targets autonomously changing its depth, speed and direction. It is designed to operate in the Baltic Sea’s archipelago circumstances and shallow waters.
The same torpedo system will be installed also into the Finnish Navy’s upcoming Pohjanmaa-class corvettes.
