Polish fighters intercept Russian surveillance plane in repeat Baltic incident

By Defence Industry Europe

Polish MiG 29 fighter jets successfully intercepted a Russian Il-20 surveillance plane over the Baltic Sea on Monday, marking the second interception of the same aircraft within just four days. The Polish Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ) confirmed the incident, which originated from Malbork Air Base in Northern Poland.

The Russian plane, taking off from Kaliningrad, was tracked flying through international airspace. DORSZ, through a statement on X (formerly Twitter), clarified that while the Russian aircraft was close to national borders, it “did not breach Polish territorial waters.”

This recent encounter follows a similar incident on May 3, when Polish F-16s from the 31st Tactical Air Base in Krzesiny were tasked with escorting the same Il-20 aircraft away from Poland’s airspace.

DORSZ has reiterated the readiness and vigilance of its forces, stating, “Every day the pilots of the Polish Armed Forces are on alert and ready to ensure the protection of Poland’s skies.”
