Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Laurynas Kasčiūnas expressed Lithuania’s enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are happy to be able to join the Piorun short-range man-portable air defence system procurement. Strengthening air defence is one of the most critical objectives on our agenda, therefore the purchase is welcome as much as collaboration with our close Ally Poland.”
The announcement comes following a visit to Vilnius by Poland’s Minister of National Defence Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, where Poland extended the invitation to Lithuania to join in acquiring the advanced Piorun system. This collaborative effort is a significant step in enhancing the air defence capabilities of the participating nations.
Currently, Lithuania operates the older generation Polish air defense system, Grom. The transition to the more advanced Piorun system represents a significant upgrade, enhancing Lithuania’s ability to protect its airspace in coordination with its allies.
The European Defence Industry Reinforcement through Common Procurement Act (EDIRPA) is a legislative initiative aimed at strengthening the European Union’s defense capabilities through joint procurement projects.
