German Eurofighters protect the Slovak sky

Arising from a new agreement between Slovak and German Defence Ministers Martin Sklenár and Boris Pistorius, the protection of Slovak airspace has been strengthened by German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets since 1 September 2023, with Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) scrambles carried out under the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS).

This comes as a separate and hence additional form of cooperation over and above the protection of Slovak skies being secured by the Czech, Hungarian and Polish Air Forces on the basis of the Joint Declaration of the Visegrad Group Countries on their Shared Commitment to Protect the Airspace of the Slovak Republic.

German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets will operate out of airbases in Germany, to which they will return on completion of their mission. This will have a positive effect on the Slovak Air Force as it sustains its capabilities to guide fighter jets across Slovak airspace and to provide Air Traffic Control (ATC) services.

Another benefit is a strengthening of the deterrence concept based on NATO’s regional defence plans, which are giving a real boost to the security of Slovakia in a dynamically changing security situation in our immediate neighbourhood.
