Hanwha Aerospace delivers additional K9 howitzers and K10 resupply vehicles to Norway

By Defence Industry Europe

Hanwha Aerospace has shipped a new batch of military equipment to Norway, consisting of four K9 Self-Propelled Howitzers and eight K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles. This delivery marks a significant step in strengthening Norway's defence capabilities under a 2022 supply contract.

The shipment builds on the success of the initial 2017 agreement, which saw Norway receive 24 K9 VIDAR systems and six K10 resupply vehicles. The artillery systems are expected to arrive in Norway within two months after undergoing final inspections, before being handed over to the Norwegian Armed Forces.

“This shipment of K9 and K10 systems is a key milestone for strengthening cooperation between Hanwha and Norway, as we’re fully committed to producing and delivering the products meeting the Norwegian requirements on time,” said Kim Dong-hyun, head of the Land Systems Business Group at Hanwha Aerospace. He added, “Hanwha will devote its efforts to complete this contract and further contribute to enhancing Norway’s defence posture.”

Norway plays an integral role in the K9 User Club, a strategic platform for nations operating the K9 system to exchange operational knowledge, maintenance expertise, and training insights. The club highlights the growing international collaboration surrounding the K9 artillery platform.

First introduced in 2001, the K9 Thunder has been procured by nine countries, including Turkey, India, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Australia, Egypt, and Romania. With approximately 1,800 units in service globally, the K9 system is renowned for its proven reliability and advanced battlefield capabilities.

The 155mm/52-calibre K9 Thunder offers precise and rapid artillery fire with a range exceeding 40 kilometres. Weighing 47 tonnes, it is optimised for “shoot and scoot” operations, allowing it to fire multiple rounds and relocate quickly to avoid enemy counter-attacks.

The K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicle, built on the K9 chassis, provides essential logistical support with a fully automated system. It carries up to 104 artillery shells and 504 propellant charges, ensuring continuous resupply under harsh combat conditions. This automated design enhances battlefield efficiency and reduces vulnerability during operations.
