The teams comprise Joint Terminal Attack Controllers and Joint Forward Observers operating without dedicated vehicles. Their role includes requesting and directing close air support for ground forces, as well as coordinating indirect artillery fire.
HENSOLDT will serve as prime contractor and assume responsibility for equipment procurement and full system integration. The company will also develop the software component for Digitally Aided Close Air Support.
The software will create a digital link between controllers on the ground and supporting aircraft. A video downlink will transmit imagery from the aircraft directly to the Joint Fire Support Team.
HENSOLDT said the connection would transfer the established man-in-the-loop concept from the air to the ground. This will keep personnel directly involved in coordinating aircraft and assessing information during close air support missions.
The configuration will also integrate the ADLER III command, control, communications, computing and fire-support system. ADLER III will enable the teams to request and coordinate ground-based indirect fire.
The equipment package will include modern communications systems and integrated power and networking solutions. Electro-optical sensors for target measurement and laser target designators will also be incorporated.
HENSOLDT will provide a field-ready carrying system for the equipment. Its design will address weight distribution, cable routing and the ergonomic positioning of individual components.
The programme will connect dismounted controllers more closely with aircraft and artillery assets. HENSOLDT said the systems would strengthen the Bundeswehr’s multi-domain capabilities for national and alliance defence.
