ICEYE introduces advanced satellite imaging mode ‘Dwell Precise’

By Defence Industry Europe

ICEYE, a global leader in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite operations, has unveiled its latest imaging innovation, Dwell Precise. This new mode, launched today, enhances the company’s existing range of Dwell products and builds on the introduction of Dwell Fine in March 2024. Dwell Precise offers a cutting-edge 25-centimetre resolution and is powered by the 1200 MHz radar bandwidth, the maximum currently permitted for commercial satellites.

The key innovation behind Dwell Precise is its ability to combine exceptionally high-quality data with high-resolution imagery, enabling the detection and identification of smaller objects and targets. This capability could prove particularly useful in identifying specific types of vehicles or military equipment without the need for additional intelligence sources. Like other modes in ICEYE’s Dwell line, Dwell Precise leverages SAR technology to gather data from multiple angles, allowing it to see through obstacles such as tree cover and foliage.

As a SAR satellite orbits Earth, it sends radar signals towards the planet’s surface, creating images based on the signals that bounce back. The increased resolution of Dwell Precise means that the level of detail in these images will now be greater than ever before, providing clearer insights for a range of applications, from environmental monitoring to defence.

John Cartwright, Senior Vice President and Head of Data Product at ICEYE, described Dwell Precise as the “industry’s highest fidelity 25 cm product,” adding that it marks the pinnacle of the company’s imaging capabilities. “The increased resolution will allow ICEYE’s customers to identify objects and features on the Earth’s surface with far greater clarity than was available previously,” he said. Importantly, this is achieved while maintaining the all-weather, day-and-night imaging capabilities for which SAR is known.

The launch of Dwell Precise underscores ICEYE’s ongoing commitment to innovation and its dedication to meeting the evolving needs of both public and private sector clients. Eric Jensen, CEO of ICEYE US, emphasised the importance of this development, stating, “The launch of Dwell Precise highlights ICEYE’s commitment to meeting the evolving mission sets of our customers through constant innovation and product improvement.”

ICEYE operates the world’s largest constellation of SAR satellites, with its first Dwell mode having been introduced in May 2023. Today’s release of Dwell Precise reaffirms the company’s role at the forefront of the Earth Observation industry, offering advanced capabilities for persistent monitoring and critical data collection across a wide range of sectors.
