ICEYE launches next-generation SAR satellites, advancing global Earth observation and defence capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

ICEYE, a global leader in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite technology, has successfully launched four new satellites, enhancing its Earth observation and surveillance capabilities. Among them is the Generation 4 (“Gen4”) satellite, a major technological advancement that strengthens ICEYE’s position in the global defence and intelligence sectors.

The satellites were launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-13 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA. Following a successful deployment facilitated by Exolaunch, all four spacecraft have established communication, and routine commissioning operations are underway.

The Gen4 satellite introduces unprecedented SAR imaging capabilities, providing the highest image quality available in the industry. With double the SAR antenna size and increased radiated power, the satellite significantly expands imaging coverage, capturing areas between 150 km and 400 km wide with 30% greater information density.

This next-generation technology enhances target detection and classification, particularly in complex defence and intelligence environments. Advanced orbit control enables more precise imaging, while increased imaging capacity ensures more effective surveillance of congested or high-priority locations in a single pass.

ICEYE’s latest innovation aims to support global customers with improved situational awareness and faster decision-making in critical missions. The ability to detect and classify vessels, vehicles, and aircraft more efficiently will be particularly valuable for national security and intelligence applications.

“With the launch of the Generation 4 satellite, ICEYE continues to lead the innovation in the SAR satellite industry,” said Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and Co-founder of ICEYE. “Our mission is to provide critical space-based infrastructure for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations, meeting the growing demand in global defence markets.”

Since 2018, ICEYE has successfully launched 48 SAR satellites, with plans to deploy over 20 new satellites annually in 2025, 2026, and beyond. This latest launch marks another step in the company’s commitment to expanding its SAR satellite constellation, ensuring continuous advancements in Earth observation technology.
