Leonardo leads successful final demonstration of JEY-CUAS project in Italy

By Defence Industry Europe

On April 11, the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) 2020 JEY-CUAS project reached a significant milestone with its final demonstration in Italy, showcasing advanced counter-drone technologies. The event, coordinated by Leonardo, was attended by representatives from the European Commission, several European Ministries of Defence, and project partners, highlighting the collaborative effort across the continent.

The JEY-CUAS (Joint European sYstem for Countering Unmanned Air Systems) project aims to develop a comprehensive counter-drone system capable of addressing the escalating threat posed by micro and mini drones. This innovative system includes capabilities for detection, tracking, classification, identification, risk assessment, and effective neutralization of drones, which may operate individually, in teams, or as part of a coordinated “swarm.”

During the demonstration, participants observed simulations on an edge-computing platform, which integrated JEY-CUAS sensing, neutralization, and command and control (C2) services. Additionally, a physical demonstrator showcased a selection of mature yet cutting-edge technologies from the JEY-CUAS development efforts. This included the seamless integration of physical components through standard interfaces and extensive system tests, which displayed the system’s capabilities from target detection to threat neutralization.

The consortium overseeing these activities consists of 40 partners from 14 European countries, including Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and others, demonstrating a robust pan-European commitment to defence innovation. Leonardo, as the coordinator, plays a pivotal role in steering the consortium towards creating effective defence solutions against the growing use of unmanned air systems in modern warfare.
