Italy and France have taken a step towards bolstering the European defence industry by signing a letter of intent to establish a joint industrial hub for ground defence. The agreement was formalized on Monday by Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and his French counterpart, Sebastien Lecornu, following their meeting on the Mediterranean island of Corsica.

This initiative is aimed at pooling top European technologies to construct stronger industrial hubs, which are essential for keeping pace with rapid technological developments. “It is crucial to bring together all the best European technologies and to make ever-stronger hubs, because we will need significant investment to keep up with technological evolution,” Minister Crosetto stated.

The letter of intent outlines a plan to enhance industrial cooperation and improve Europe’s defence capabilities through the joint development of new land platforms. This strategic move builds on existing cooperation between French and Italian companies, including the satellite services company Telespazio and space manufacturer Thales Alenia Space.

The ministers also took the opportunity to discuss the current situations in the Middle East and Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of a united European response to global security challenges.

The new collaboration is set to include ambitious projects like the development of the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), a next-generation tank. “The strategic alliance will enable the implementation of collaborative programmes between European nations through the strengthening of industrial bases and the development of the future generation of platforms,” according to the Italian defence ministry.
