Netherlands to acquire NASAMS and NOMADS air defence systems from Kongsberg

By Defence Industry Europe

The Netherlands has announced plans to acquire NASAMS and NOMADS air defence systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, in a deal valued at approximately EUR 1 billion.

On October 14, the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) submitted a recommendation to Parliament outlining its intention to proceed with the acquisition as part of the CITADEL programme, which focuses on integrated air and missile defence.

Kongsberg’s President, Eirik Lie, stated that the acquisition would significantly enhance the Netherlands’ operational capabilities and highlighted NASAMS’ position as the leading medium-range air defence system globally.

The Netherlands has utilised NASAMS since 2006, and the new systems will expand the country’s ground-based air defence capabilities. NASAMS can employ various missiles, including the AMRAAM-Extended Range and AIM-9X Sidewinder, providing both long- and short-range defence.

In addition to NASAMS, the Netherlands will also acquire the National Manoeuvre Air Defence System (NOMADS), a mobile air defence system designed to protect land forces in dynamic warfare environments.

NOMADS includes two missile launch canisters, a 3D radar, and the Kongsberg PROTECTOR remote weapon station, fully integrating with NASAMS and other NATO systems for autonomous and networked operations.

Kongsberg will work with Dutch industry to deliver the systems, with the first deliveries scheduled for 2028. No further statements will be made until the contract is signed, which is expected later this year.
