Filmed in Norway, Poland, Spain, Australia and Ukraine, the documentary traces NASAMS from military exercises and training on NATO’s eastern borders to the realities of the war in Ukraine. Its focus reflects the growing importance of air defence for armed forces preparing to counter missile and drone attacks.
The film provides rare access to military personnel, defence specialists, engineers and international experts. It also includes footage of military exercises, missile testing and the continuing conflict in Ukraine.
The sections filmed in Ukraine show a country facing repeated missile and drone attacks. They examine the role of air defence in protecting cities, critical infrastructure and soldiers.
“Sky Defenders” also looks at Europe’s changing security environment and NATO’s preparations for a new era of warfare. Air defence has emerged as one of the most important battlefield capabilities covered by the documentary.
“There can be only minutes, sometimes seconds, to detect, identify and respond,” Executive Producer Michael Fardell said. “We wanted audiences to understand what happens inside that extraordinary race against time.”
The documentary follows the radar operators, missile crews, engineers and soldiers responsible for protecting the airspace above them. It combines the technical workings of NASAMS with the experiences of those operating the system and the people it is designed to protect.
