Patria and Rheinmetall have introduced their prototype Boxer Armoured Mortar Variant at the Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD 2024) exhibition in Millbrook, Bedfordshire. This unveiling represents a significant advancement in the development of the British Army’s new Armoured Mortar Variant, highlighting the innovative capabilities of both companies.

The Boxer Armoured Mortar Variant has been developed to improve battlefield effectiveness, featuring Patria’s advanced NEMO 120mm turreted mortar system integrated onto Rheinmetall’s highly mobile and well-protected Boxer platform. This collaboration reflects the companies’ shared dedication to providing cutting-edge military technology.

The new variant boasts a high rate of fire, with the 120mm mortar system capable of delivering up to 10 rounds per minute, allowing for rapid and sustained firepower in combat situations. One of its key features is the ability to fire while on the move, which increases operational flexibility and reduces the risk of counter-battery fire, enhancing the overall safety of the crew.

Unlike traditional mortar systems that are limited to indirect fire, the Boxer Armoured Mortar Variant offers the capability for both direct and indirect fire, increasing its versatility in various combat scenarios. The system also incorporates a feature known as Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI), which enables up to five rounds to hit a target at the same time, maximising the impact on enemy positions. This capability can be further amplified by coordinating fire from multiple platforms.

The vehicle’s extended range, capable of engaging targets up to 10 kilometres away, allows for support of frontline troops from a safer distance. Additionally, the turreted design of the mortar system ensures that the operators remain protected within the vehicle at all times, enhancing survivability and providing added security in hostile environments.

Commenting on the debut, Rebecca Richards, Deputy CEO at Rheinmetall Vehicle Systems International, said: “We are excited to present this innovative Armoured Mortar Variant at the DVD2024 exhibition. This collaboration with Patria underscores our shared commitment to advancing military technology and providing the UK’s armed forces with the best possible equipment.” Hugo Vanbockryck, Senior Vice President Market Area Europe at Patria, added: “The Armoured Mortar Variant represents a significant leap forward in superior battlefield capabilities. We are proud to partner with Rheinmetall in delivering this state-of-the-art solution to our customers.”

The DVD2024 exhibition, held on 18 September, is a premier event for showcasing the latest advancements in defence technology. Patria and Rheinmetall are welcoming attendees to visit their booths to learn more about the Armoured Mortar Variant and other innovative defence solutions.
