Poland has formalised an intergovernmental agreement (LOA) with the United States to procure an additional batch of RTX AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. The deal, valued at approximately USD 175 million, includes 232 missiles, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2028.

he U.S. Department of State approved the sale in March 2024, initially estimating the package’s value at up to USD 219 million. The advanced weaponry will equip Poland’s fleet of multi-role fighter aircraft, including F-16, F-35A, and FA-50PL models.

This purchase marks Poland’s continued investment in the AIM-9X system, which has been steadily acquired since 2004. Previous purchases include 178 missiles in 2004, linked to the acquisition of 48 F-16C/D Jastrząb aircraft, and 92 missiles ordered in 2016.

The November agreement is Poland’s third major missile procurement in recent months. Earlier agreements secured AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles and 400 AGM-158B JASSM-ER cruise missiles. Additionally, the U.S. State Department has approved the sale of AGM-88G AARGM-ER missiles, which are designed to penetrate advanced air defences.
