Rheinmetall secures landmark EUR 3 billion contract for Bundeswehr infantry digitisation

By Defenc Industry Europe

Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH has signed its largest-ever framework contract with the German Armed Forces for the digitisation of infantry soldier-systems. The agreement, valued at up to EUR 3.1 billion, will run until the end of 2030.

The contract, awarded by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), enables the acquisition and modernisation of 368 platoon systems. This includes both an upgrade of the 68 existing IdZ-ES (Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System) units and the purchase of 24 additional systems.

A firm order worth approximately EUR 417 million has been placed for the initial procurement phase, set to be recorded in the first quarter of 2025. Signed on 6 February 2025, this marks a significant milestone for Rheinmetall and the German military in advancing digital warfare capabilities.

The IdZ-ES platoon system consists of 34 individual soldier-kits and a range of peripheral components. These include advanced IT equipment, optics, optronics, protective gear, military clothing, and carrying equipment, ensuring soldiers are well-equipped for modern battlefield conditions.

As the main contractor, Rheinmetall will oversee the entire project, coordinating the work of over 30 subcontractors. The new system builds on the IdZ-ES VJTF 2023 variant, addressing obsolescence issues and enhancing communication with Puma infantry fighting vehicles, Boxer armoured transport vehicles, and airborne platforms.

The modernised system is also designed to integrate with the Bundeswehr’s ‘Digitisation of Land-Based Operations’ (D-LBO) communication network. This marks a significant step towards fully networked and technology-driven combat operations for Germany’s armed forces.
