Romania’s Ministry of Defence said the deal was signed government-to-government. Funding will come through the European SAFE programme.
The agreement covers two separate acquisition packages. Both are being handled through a joint purchase procedure.
France’s Directorate General of Armaments will act as ordering authority. The structure places the procurement under a French state framework.
Romania is buying 12 Airbus H225M multi-role transport helicopters. The helicopter package is worth about €757 million.
The order also includes logistics and training support. It gives Airbus another contract in the Romanian market.
Romania’s Ministry of Internal Affairs ordered Airbus helicopters on May 30. That order covered five H145s and seven H160s.
The second package covers 12 Thales Ground Master 200 MM/A radars. It is valued at €247 million, including logistics and training.
The final prices are below earlier SAFE programme estimates. The combined saving is about €100 million.
Romania becomes another European NATO buyer of the H225M. France and Hungary already operate the aircraft.
The Netherlands has also ordered the H225M. Romania’s purchase adds transport capacity under a European financing route.
The radar order adds air-surveillance capability to the same package. Together, the deals strengthen Romanian procurement ties with France.
For NATO, the agreement adds capacity on Europe’s eastern flank. For Romania, it brings helicopters and radars under one funded plan.
