Saab launches upgraded HMS Halland submarine, enhancing Sweden’s naval defence capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

Swedish defence company Saab has successfully launched the submarine HMS Halland after completing a significant mid-life upgrade at its shipyard in Karlskrona. The vessel is the third and final Gotland-class submarine to undergo modernisation, featuring advanced technologies that will also be used in Sweden’s upcoming Blekinge-class submarines.

The upgrade enhances Sweden’s naval capabilities, ensuring HMS Halland remains operational for many years to come. It will now serve alongside HMS Gotland and HMS Uppland, both of which have already received similar modifications.

“Securing critical underwater infrastructure and sea lanes is more important than ever. The launch of HMS Halland is a testament to Saab’s ability to upgrade and deliver advanced submarines with the capabilities the Swedish Navy requires. With HMS Halland, the Swedish Navy, and by extension NATO, is given additional muscle to defend and monitor the Baltic Sea,” says Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab’s Business Area Kockums.

The improved submarine will strengthen Sweden’s ability to secure critical underwater infrastructure and sea lanes, particularly in the Baltic Sea. As Sweden moves closer to NATO integration, the upgrade provides additional support for regional security and defence operations.

During the modernisation process, over twenty key systems were replaced, including new sensors and command systems. These upgrades significantly enhance the submarine’s stealth, endurance, and operational effectiveness in Sweden’s challenging maritime environment.
