Sener to design actuators for Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 MSE missile

By Defence Industry Europe

Sener, a leading Spanish engineering and technology company, has begun the design of actuators for Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 MSE missile. This collaboration was formalised during a recent visit to Spain by Lockheed Martin, with Tim Cahill, President of Missiles and Fire Control at Lockheed Martin, and Rafael Orbe, General Director of Defence at Sener, signing the agreement.

The signing ceremony, attended by Lieutenant General Miguel Ivorra Ruiz, Director General of Strategy and Innovation of the Defence Industry in Spain, cements Sener’s role in the global supply chain of the PAC-3 MSE. Sener will be responsible for designing, developing, and qualifying the missile’s actuators within Spain, with deployment intended for international customers.

Following the agreement, Sener has initiated design activities to meet an ambitious schedule and deliver the actuators as quickly as possible. This builds on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last year between Sener and Lockheed Martin, enhancing their strategic partnership.

“This agreement with Lockheed Martin reinforces Sener’s role as an international Centre of Excellence for the design and production of Control and Actuation Systems (CAS),” said Rafael Orbe. “Furthermore, this partnership is a great opportunity to strengthen the value chain of the Spanish industry as a key partner in the global supply chain in a critical area such as advanced interception systems.”

Spain’s involvement in the PAC-3 MSE programme follows a formal agreement signed in June 2024 with the U.S. government to acquire the PAC-3 MSE and associated support equipment. This advanced missile system enhances Spain’s Patriot battalions, improving their capability to defend against threats such as tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aircraft.

The PAC-3 MSE has been selected by 17 nations to provide state-of-the-art air and missile defence capabilities, reflecting its effectiveness in addressing modern security challenges. Lockheed Martin highlighted the importance of the partnership with Sener in supporting Spain’s security needs.

“Our partnership with Sener will provide Spain with critical security assets and boost its integrated air and missile defence system capabilities against ever-evolving threats,” said Brian Kubik, Vice President of PAC-3 Programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “We look forward to collaborating with Spanish industry and strengthening our existing relationships.”
