Slovakia to buy AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Slovakia, involving AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters and related equipment and services. Valued at an estimated USD 600 million, this deal will mark a pivotal step in strengthening Slovakia's military capabilities and operational readiness.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of this proposed sale, which underscores the ongoing defence collaboration between the United States and Slovakia. The Slovak government has requested the purchase of twelve AH-1Z attack helicopters, twenty-six T-700 GE 401C engines (including two spares), and 1,680 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS). Additionally, Slovakia aims to acquire fourteen Honeywell embedded global positioning and inertial navigation systems (with two spares), among other critical equipment.

The package also includes a comprehensive array of non-MDE (Major Defence Equipment) items, such as support and test equipment, weapons and munitions, countermeasures, spare and repair parts, communication equipment, mission planning tools, and software support. Notable components feature the Helmet Mounted Display System/Optimized TopOwl, Target Sight Systems, ANVIS-9 night vision cueing displays, and advanced cryptographic equipment.

Bell Textron and General Electric are slated to be the primary contractors for this substantial acquisition. The proposed sale will also encompass various training and logistical support services, ensuring that Slovakia’s military personnel are well-equipped to operate and maintain the new equipment effectively.

This approval follows a March 2023 announcement, where Slovakia revealed it had received a U.S. offer valued at over $1 billion, with a significant portion of the costs to be covered through the Foreign Military Financing program. The deal is seen as a reciprocal gesture for Slovakia’s assistance to Ukraine, highlighting the strategic and cooperative defence ties within the region.

The potential acquisition of the AH-1Z Vipers will enable Slovakia to rebuild its attack helicopter fleet, which saw the retirement of the last Mi-24 helicopters in 2011. According to the DSCA, this transaction will enhance Slovakia’s capability to respond to current and future threats, ensuring a robust defence posture in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
