Terma awarded contract to supply 3D-Audio system for U.S. Air Force F-16s

By Defence Industry Europe

Danish defence company Terma has secured a USD 9 million contract to equip the U.S. Air Force Combat Command’s F-16 fighter aircraft with its advanced 3D-Audio system. This two-year upgrade initiative will provide the Air Combat Command with innovative audio technology, designed to enhance situational awareness and mission success for pilots.

The contract falls under Terma’s Self-Protection Systems (SPS) business unit, which focuses on advanced safety solutions for military applications. “With this award, the 3D-Audio program continues to be a significant cornerstone of our offerings to meet the demand for best-in-class audio systems from the global community,” stated Rob Strasser, Vice President of Terma Self-Protection Systems.

Terma’s 3D-Audio technology spatially separates audio signals, aligning them with the direction of incoming threats and incorporating active noise reduction. This technology aims to reduce the “crowded-room” effect in the cockpit, enabling pilots to interpret audio cues quickly and accurately—a critical advantage in high-pressure scenarios.

Compatible with all aircraft types, the 3D-Audio system supports mission-critical decision-making by allowing pilots to process information faster. “Every second counts,” says Terma, emphasising that their 3D-Audio system enables pilots to make better-informed decisions, ultimately supporting mission success and helping ensure that pilots return home safely.
