Industry partners demonstrated their prototypes during ground evaluations focused first on mobility, deployability and physical footprint. Vendors then conducted dynamic tests of software agility and connectivity, giving Air Force evaluators data on how the competing systems could perform in operational conditions.
The evaluation represents the first phase of the selection process for the C2E integrator. The system ultimately selected will support Agile Combat Employment operations at the Experimental Operations Unit before integrating directly with production aircraft.
“Getting prototypes into the hands of our operational and acquisitions warfighters for a swift, combined evaluation is a direct embodiment of acquisition transformation,” stated Col. Eric Reagan, Director of the Agile Development Office. “This partnership allows us to accelerate the fielding of the best-value capabilities to the Department of War.”
The demonstrations were hosted by the Ohio Air National Guard’s 178th Wing at Springfield Air National Guard Base. Personnel from the wing provided facilities, manpower and operational support for testing the emerging systems under realistic ground conditions.
“The 178th Wing’s foundational support was key to the success of this phase, allowing our evaluators and industry partners to focus entirely on technical performance,” Lt Col Gregory Bieler, Materiel Leader CCA Software, Autonomy and Teaming, said. “This successful collaboration establishes a strong foundation and opens the door for future integration and testing as we continue to mature the C2E and CCA program.”
The Air Force said data collected during the demonstrations will shape the broader C2E acquisition strategy and inform the next stage of the selection process. The effort is also part of the Department of the Air Force’s acquisition reform push, which is aimed at shortening the path between prototype evaluation and operational fielding.
A second prototype phase is expected to begin soon and will focus on vendors’ C2E cloud capabilities. Companies will be asked to refine and demonstrate those systems as the Air Force moves closer to fielding the tactical network needed to control future Collaborative Combat Aircraft.
