U.S. Army: 188th Infantry Brigade opens innovation lab to support drone training and development

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Army’s 188th Infantry Brigade has established a new Innovation Lab focused on the development and integration of drone technology into military training. The initiative supports First Army’s mission to prepare Reserve and National Guard units for mobilisation.

The lab provides soldiers with hands-on experience in drone assembly, programming and operational training. It aims to familiarise personnel with emerging technologies that may play a role in future military operations.

According to Major Trevor Barrett, the brigade’s Innovations Officer, early exposure to drone systems helps improve adaptability and technical skills among soldiers. He noted that the initiative contributes to building a more capable and responsive force.

The Innovation Lab enables collaboration between soldiers from different military occupational specialties to build and modify drones for specific training requirements. Utilising commercially available components and 3D printing, the lab supports the design of small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) for reconnaissance purposes.

In addition to construction, the lab incorporates drone use into field exercises and simulations, including training in piloting and countering electronic threats. This allows soldiers to gain experience in operating drones in both offensive and defensive scenarios.

Barrett indicated that sUAS operation may become a common skill across various roles in the Army. He expects a wider range of drone types to be introduced into future training and operations.

The brigade plans to use the drones developed in the lab during upcoming events, including eXportable Combat Training Capability (XCTC) exercises and the Pershing Cup Best OC/T Competition. These activities will provide further opportunities to evaluate the systems in realistic training environments.

The Innovation Lab forms part of the Army’s broader approach to modernisation and readiness. It reflects ongoing efforts to explore practical, soldier-led applications of new technologies in support of training and operational goals.

As the 188th Infantry Brigade continues to develop its drone programme, the lab serves as a platform for testing new ideas and enhancing technical proficiency. The initiative supports the Army’s wider aim of preparing soldiers for evolving challenges on future battlefields.
