This latest order is part of a $296 million firm-fixed-price contract awarded in 2018, which allows for the purchase of up to 683 HDTs over seven years.
The order comprises 74 trucks funded by the presidential budget and an additional 29 trucks procured by the National Guard.
These heavy-duty vehicles are essential for military construction projects, including maintaining airfields, roadways, landing strips, and other critical infrastructure.
Dave Hartzell, president of Mack Defense, highlighted the trucks’ reliability in global military operations. “
The Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard continue to invest in these modern HDTs to ensure our soldiers have the right tools for mission success,” he said.
The M917A3 HDTs are based on the Mack Granite commercial truck but feature military-grade enhancements such as all-wheel drive, heavy-duty rear axles, and increased suspension ride height.
These modifications ensure the vehicles meet the U.S. military’s stringent requirements.
Advanced features like ABS, user-friendly control systems, and active safety technologies set the M917A3 apart from older models.
The Army’s decision to invest in the modern HDTs also reflects a focus on sustainability and operational efficiency, according to Hartzell.
Production of the HDTs began in early 2021 at the Mack Experience Center (MEC) in Allentown, Pennsylvania, following a $6.5 million investment to establish a dedicated production line.
The MEC facility has undergone rigorous quality inspections by government auditors to ensure the trucks meet military standards.
The former Customer Adaptation Center at the MEC has been relocated to Mack’s Lehigh Valley Operations (LVO) in Macungie, Pennsylvania.
This facility now handles modifications for Mack Class 8 vehicles destined for North American and export markets.
