The squadron will operate from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni under the Unit Deployment Program and become part of Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. VMFA-533 will replace VMFA-232, the F-35B squadron currently serving in the rotational role.
During the deployment, the Hawks will conduct aviation operations and maintain combat readiness across the region. The unit will support the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing’s ability to provide task-organized aviation forces capable of operating from naval and expeditionary locations.
The Unit Deployment Program gives units based in the continental United States operational experience in the Indo-Pacific. Continuous and overlapping deployments allow the Marine Corps to maintain a recurring presence while rotating squadrons and personnel through the region.
The Marine Corps said the deployment would strengthen operational readiness and support regional stability. It also reflects Washington’s continuing commitment to the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security.
