The squadron flew its first F-35C flight in July and is now carrying out routine flight and maintenance operations. It is working toward Safe for Flight certification in early 2027, a step toward initial operational capability.
VMFA-115 completed its final Hornet deployment in October 2023 and was deactivated on Nov. 9 that year at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina, where it served under Marine Aircraft Group 31. The reactivation made Cherry Point its official home station and placed the squadron under Marine Aircraft Group 14, part of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and II Marine Expeditionary Force.
Lt. Col. Hugh E. Anderson took command at the ceremony. Sgt. Maj. Derek B. Carlson took over as the squadron’s senior enlisted leader.
“Modernization is about more than just a new airframe; it demands an unrelenting focus on warfighting readiness,” Anderson said. “Our Marines and Sailors have put in tremendous work to reactivate this squadron, and the Silver Eagles will be ready to project combat power whenever our nation calls.”
The F-35C has reinforced landing gear, folding wingtips and an arresting hook for operations aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. It carries roughly 50% more fuel than the F-35B, giving it a greater combat radius and more time on station, while its larger internal weapons bays can hold heavier precision-guided munitions.
