A U.S. Marine Corps unit will work with the Finnish Navy to improve maritime surveillance in the Gulf of Finland under NATO’s Baltic Sentry activity. Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen approved the cooperation, which follows a similar effort in spring 2025.

The unit will help strengthen maritime domain awareness and contribute to an integrated regional picture. NATO launched Baltic Sentry to increase its Baltic Sea presence and improve its ability to prevent and counter threats to critical undersea infrastructure.

“Having the US Marine Corps unit in Finland and as part of NATO’s Baltic Sentry will strengthen the security of Finland and the Baltic Sea region,” Häkkänen said. “This cooperation is a continuation of our international exercises with our Allies.”

Häkkänen cited the results of the earlier cooperation as a basis for the new contribution. The Marines will participate in Baltic Sentry as part of NATO’s enhanced vigilance activity in the region.

“A similar cooperation produced great results in spring 2025,” he said. “The expertise and systems of the US Marine Corps are ideal for enhancing Finland’s maritime domain awareness and supporting our maritime surveillance.”
