The U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Oregon arrived at Grøtsund, near Tromsø, Norway, on October 6 for a scheduled port call. The visit is part of routine U.S. and allied submarine operations across northern Europe and the Arctic.

Grøtsund serves as a logistics hub for allied vessels, providing replenishment, routine maintenance and crew rest. Another Virginia-class submarine, USS Delaware, visited the port on September 1.

“Our port visit to Grøtsund reflects the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship between the United States and Norway, a vital NATO ally,” said Capt. David Beam, deputy commodore of Task Force 69. “Security and stability in the High North are critical to the collective defense of Europe and North America.”

“We are profoundly grateful to our Norwegian hosts for their continued partnership, world-class port facilities and generous hospitality as our submariners enjoy a well-deserved break,” Beam said. Oregon’s crew will visit Tromsø and engage with the local community during the stop.

The Navy described submarine operations in the High North and Norwegian Sea as a longstanding, predictable part of NATO collective defense. It said operating above the Arctic Circle is standard practice for forward-deployed naval forces.

U.S. forces regularly train alongside the Royal Norwegian Armed Forces to maintain shared maritime awareness and interoperability. The Navy said these deployments help keep sea lines of communication open across the North Atlantic and Arctic gateways.

Oregon, designated SSN 793, is the Navy’s 20th Virginia-class attack submarine and its second Block IV boat. The Block IV design reduces scheduled major dockyard overhauls from four to three compared with Block III, allowing an additional deployment period for each submarine.

Ten submarines are planned for the Block IV variant. Virginia-class submarines are designed to operate in coastal waters and the open ocean.

Their missions include anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, land strikes, special operations support, intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance, and mine warfare. Fast-attack submarines also support operations ashore through special operations forces and Tomahawk cruise missiles.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts joint and naval operations across Europe and Africa. It frequently works with allied and interagency partners to support U.S. interests, security and regional stability.
