Rohde & Schwarz has expanded its testing equipment portfolio to meet the advanced demands of next-generation satellite networks, specifically supporting the optimisation of Telesat's Lightspeed Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation. The company’s state-of-the-art signal generators and spectrum and signal analysers are central to modelling and evaluating the performance of Telesat’s integrated space and terrestrial network.

Telesat, a leading satellite operator listed on Nasdaq and TSX under TSAT, is using Rohde & Schwarz’s advanced testing tools to refine the service link design of the Telesat Lightspeed network. The initiative aims to deliver high-capacity, fibre-like speed connectivity on a global scale by the end of 2027.

Gerald Tietscher, Vice President Signal Generators, Power Supplies & Meters at Rohde & Schwarz, stated: “At Rohde & Schwarz, we’re proud to collaborate with visionary companies like Telesat, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in satellite connectivity. Our work on the Telesat Lightspeed project exemplifies how innovative test and measurement solutions can accelerate the development of cutting-edge technologies, ultimately transforming global communications.”

Telesat utilises the R&S SMW signal generator and R&S FSW spectrum and signal analyser from Rohde & Schwarz to qualify and verify RF chipsets and satellite modems from multiple vendors. These tools enable testing of receiver chipsets and detailed evaluation of modem performance across waveforms such as DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2, ensuring reliable, high-throughput data transmission.

As a result of this collaboration, Rohde & Schwarz introduced new product enhancements to support the unique demands of the Lightspeed network, including technologies like Beam Hopping, Superframe, and expanded return channels under DVB-RCS2. These updates allow accurate testing of network capabilities previously unavailable in satellite deployments.

The advanced testing functionalities developed by Rohde & Schwarz support not only Telesat’s satellite systems but also benefit the wider ecosystem, including modem and chipset manufacturers. This comprehensive support strengthens the end-to-end reliability of the Lightspeed platform.

Aneesh Dalvi, Vice President of Lightspeed Systems Development at Telesat, commented: “Rohde & Schwarz’s innovative products that support the Telesat Lightspeed waveform capability are a key enabler for validating system performance prior to the availability of production satellites and ground terminals. The integration of Rohde & Schwarz test equipment into our LEO development labs allows Telesat to build automated development and test environments to support 24/7 availability for onsite and remote testing.”
