Boeing has been awarded a contract worth over $173 million by the U.S. Air Force to supply eight additional MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters, along with training and sustainment support. This brings the total number of aircraft under contract to 34 and marks the first deployment of MH-139As to Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota.

“The MH-139A offers increased speed, range and payload capacity critical to supporting U.S. national security missions,” said Azeem Khan, MH-139 programme director. “We look forward to delivering these advanced aircraft to bases across the country.”

The contract follows a $178 million order for seven aircraft in April and supports the continued rollout of the helicopter as it approaches Initial Operational Capability. Initial Operational Test & Evaluation flights have recently been completed, advancing the programme’s readiness.

To date, Boeing has delivered 18 aircraft, including 12 from the low-rate initial production phase, with four more expected to be delivered this year. The first operational unit was completed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana earlier in 2025.

The MH-139A, derived from Leonardo Helicopters’ AW139 and customised by Boeing with military equipment, is designed for missions such as patrol, search and rescue, and the transport of troops and cargo. “The MH-139A Grey Wolf represents the best of partnership and proven capability,” said Robert Beyer, MH-139 senior programme manager at Leonardo Helicopters.

“By building on the trusted AW139 platform, we’ve been able to deliver a versatile aircraft to the warfighter that is already demonstrating its value to the U.S. Air Force,” Beyer added. “With each new lot, we are proud to continue strengthening national security missions while supporting American manufacturing and jobs.”
