Rheinmetall is set to play a central role in the RCH1 55 wheeled howitzer project following a major order placed by the German Armed Forces with Artec GmbH. Under the contract, Rheinmetall will supply key electrical systems, software and 155mm weapon systems for the new artillery platform.

Artec GmbH received an order on 19 December 2025 for the first 84 RCH 155 wheeled howitzers, based on a framework agreement with the Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support covering up to 500 systems. The initial order, including training equipment as well as service and logistical support, is valued at around €1.2 billion.

Rheinmetall’s deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027 and conclude in 2029, supporting the introduction of the RCH 155 into service with the German Armed Forces. Artec GmbH, a joint venture between KNDS Germany and Rheinmetall Landsysteme, is responsible for the Boxer vehicle family on which the howitzer is based.

The RCH155 combines the automatic and remotely controlled 155mm artillery gun module with the protection and mobility of the Boxer wheeled armoured vehicle. Rheinmetall’s supplied systems enable fully automated operation, firing on the move, engagement of targets at distances of up to 40 kilometres and a reduced crew of two soldiers due to the high level of automation.

Ukraine is the first user of the RCH 155, having ordered 54 systems from KNDS Germany in three batches, with Rheinmetall also supplying electrical systems, software and weapon systems for these vehicles. The United Kingdom has also announced its intention to procure the RCH 155, following a cooperation agreement between the German and UK governments announced in April 2024.
