ICEYE has launched and deployed five new Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites, lifting off on 26 November 2025 aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 15 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The company confirmed that each satellite has established communication and has begun routine commissioning.

The Finnish Defence Forces have taken another step in building an independent space-based surveillance capability with the launch of their second synthetic aperture radar satellite on January 11, 2026. The satellite was launched as part of a rideshare mission organised by SpaceX from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, United States.

The satellite programme is based on a letter of intent signed in June 2025 between Finland’s Ministry of Defence and the Finnish company ICEYE. Following the agreement, the Defence Forces ordered a satellite remote sensing system in September 2025, covering three satellites with options to extend their service life and expand the system.

According to the Defence Forces, the capability has progressed quickly, with the second proprietary SAR satellite successfully integrated through Exolaunch before launch. The satellites are intended to strengthen Finland’s independent intelligence and surveillance capacity by enabling imaging and monitoring of any location regardless of weather or lighting conditions.

The data produced by the SAR satellites can also support the needs of other authorities, broadening their use beyond military purposes. Similar procurements have been made by countries such as the Netherlands and Poland, and the capability is expected to support cooperation with allies and reinforce NATO’s collective deterrence and defence.
