Ukraine expects an additional delivery of Mirage 2000-5 fighter aircraft from France, which officials say will significantly strengthen the country’s air capabilities. The aircraft are expected to improve Ukraine’s ability to intercept cruise missiles and drones used in attacks, including Shahed systems.

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine said the Mirage 2000 is a multirole fighter equipped with digital avionics and modern radar systems. It also carries electronic warfare equipment that significantly enhances its combat capabilities.

According to the ministry, the Dassault Mirage aircraft Ukraine will receive are close to the 4++ generation of fighter jets. They exceed the capabilities of the MiG-29 fighters currently in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Officials described the Mirage aircraft as extensively modernised fourth-generation fighters whose combat capabilities, radar equipment and manoeuvrability approach those of fifth-generation aircraft. They have improved avionics and are lighter and more manoeuvrable than most similar aircraft, while capable of carrying out combat missions at altitudes of up to 18 kilometres.

The Mirage 2000 aircraft are equipped with powerful radar systems and a range of weapons, including high-precision Magic-2 missiles. These systems allow the aircraft to detect and intercept low-observable cruise missiles and attack drones such as Shahed, Geran and Gerbera.

The aircraft can also neutralise enemy operational-tactical reconnaissance drones, the ministry said. For this reason, Mirage 2000 fighters are considered important in countering Russia’s aerial attacks, which Ukraine identifies as a key priority in its War Plan.

The aircraft’s weapon stations are compatible with a wide range of NATO-standard air-launched weapons. This enables the jets to deploy Storm Shadow or SCALP missiles, AASM Hammer guided aerial bombs and other types of armament.

Ukrainian defence officials said that placing such aircraft in service would significantly strengthen the country’s air defence capabilities. This is considered particularly important during large-scale missile and drone attacks by Russia.

The transfer of Mirage 2000 aircraft was discussed during a February meeting between Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, Mykhailo Fedorov, and France’s Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, Catherine Vautrin. The discussions focused on expanding military support and strengthening Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.

France delivered the first Mirage 2000 aircraft to Ukraine in early 2025. Ukrainian pilots completed several months of training in France to ensure they could operate the aircraft effectively.
