Airbus delivers first two H145M military helicopters to Cyprus National Guard

By Defence Industry Europe

Airbus has delivered the first two of six H145M multi-role helicopters to the Republic of Cyprus. The remaining four are scheduled for delivery later this year, with the helicopters to be operated by the Cypriot National Guard.

The value of the contract has not been disclosed, but similar agreements suggest a total worth of approximately €85 million. This acquisition marks Cyprus’s entry into a growing group of European nations operating the H145M for a variety of missions.

“With hybrid warfare set to play an increasing role in future conflicts, militaries will seek versatile helicopters that can perform a variety of pivotal functions,” said Olivier Michalon, Executive Vice President for Global Business at Airbus Helicopters. “In this context, the choice of the H145M is particularly astute and the Republic of Cyprus joins a large group of European militaries operating the multi-role H145M for a wide range of missions including training, special operations, troop transport and light attack.”

The H145M is a military version of the proven H145 twin-engine helicopter and is equipped with Airbus’s HForce weapons system. Its armaments include machine guns, rockets, and missiles, while its ability to operate in networked combat environments makes it a standout in its class.

With crewed-uncrewed teaming capabilities and a modular design, the H145M can be quickly reconfigured for various missions. These include light attack roles, special forces operations with fast-roping gear, hoisting, and external cargo transport.

The global H145 family has amassed more than eight million flight hours across civil, law enforcement, and military use. Notable military operators include Germany, the United States, Hungary, Serbia, Luxembourg, and Thailand.

The German Bundeswehr operates 24 H145Ms, while the U.S. Army uses nearly 500 UH-72 Lakota helicopters, a variant of the H145, with over 1.5 million flight hours recorded. Recent international orders include up to 82 units from Germany, 17 from Belgium, six from Brunei, and four from Ireland.

Powered by twin Safran Arriel 2E engines and featuring the Helionix digital avionics suite, the H145M offers high performance and ease of operation. A low acoustic footprint also makes it the quietest helicopter in its class, enhancing its suitability for discreet military operations.
