Belgium orders advanced artillery systems from KNDS

By Defence Industry Europe

The Belgian Council of Ministers has officially confirmed the procurement of advanced military hardware from KNDS, marking a significant enhancement of Belgium's artillery capabilities.

The order includes 19 CAESAR new generation (NG) self-propelled howitzers and 24 Griffon MEPAC mortar systems.

This acquisition builds on a previous agreement from 2022 under the CaMo2 program, which saw Belgium securing 9 CAESAR NG artillery systems, with deliveries anticipated in 2027.

The CAESAR NG represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor, boasting a new chassis, a more robust 460 hp engine, an armored cabin with Level 2 protection, improved fire control software, the BARAGE countermeasure system, and the latest CONTACT radio station.

Additionally, the Belgian Armed Forces are set to receive twenty-four Griffon MEPAC (Mounted Mortar for Fire Support) systems, replacing the older MO-120-RT mortars.

These systems will be distributed among two batteries from two battalions of “MEPAC.” The Griffon MEPAC features the 2R2M 120mm semi-automatic mortar system, developed by the French company Thales.

This rifled, recoiled mounted mortar system offers significant flexibility and firepower, capable of firing through power-operated roof hatches and being stored within the vehicle during transit.

The mortar can traverse 360° and elevate between 40–85°, all powered hydraulically, ensuring rapid deployment and high effectiveness in various combat scenarios.
