The tanker will add to Britain’s existing military contribution to Saudi air defence. UK personnel and air defence equipment are already deployed to help protect the country from missile and drone attacks.
The Ministry of Defence said Saudi Arabia and Yemen had the right to defend themselves. It also condemned the Houthi attacks and described the group as a threat to stability in the Middle East.
London views the crisis as a direct economic and security concern for Britain. Further escalation in the Gulf could increase prices, disrupt energy supplies and raise costs for UK businesses.
Saudi Arabia and Yemen are long-standing British partners with important roles in regional security. The UK government sees their stability as central to protecting energy flows and trade routes linking the Gulf with international markets.
Britain said its support was intended to help contain the immediate threat while encouraging a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Yemen. The deployment places additional RAF capacity behind that policy without changing the defensive scope of the UK mission.
