Extended-range artillery ammunition is one of the key priorities of the Defence Forces of Ukraine. The need was specifically highlighted by the President of Ukraine during the Ramstein-format meeting and is also regularly raised with the Ministry of Defence by service members on the front line.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, said: “As the drone kill zone expands, we are adjusting our artillery priorities. We proposed that our partners reallocate part of the resources previously designated for short-range ammunition to extended-range artillery capabilities.”
The ministry said the changing battlefield and the expanding drone kill zone are reshaping Ukraine’s artillery requirements. Extended-range rounds allow artillery units to strike enemy forces from greater distances while reducing risks to Ukrainian artillery crews.
Denmark was among the first countries to respond quickly to Ukraine’s request. During a joint audit of support efforts, officials identified the possibility of reallocating unused resources previously designated for short-range ammunition to extended-range artillery rounds.
As a result, the Defence Forces of Ukraine will receive additional extended-range ammunition, some of which has already arrived in the country. “Following the President’s directive, we are working to ensure that every decision delivers maximum impact by strengthening the protection of our skies, reinforcing the front line, and enhancing our ability to destroy the enemy’s military potential,” Fedorov said.
The ministry said the partnership with Denmark is an example of support tailored to real-world battlefield requirements. Ukraine said it is grateful for decisions that help its service members sustain pressure on the enemy and strike critical targets at long range.
The announcement underlines Ukraine’s focus on adapting artillery support to current battlefield conditions. It also shows how partner funding decisions are being adjusted to meet operational needs identified by Ukraine’s defence leadership and front-line forces.
