EDGE Group has completed development of its UAE-made MK 82 Penetrator aircraft munition following performance and environmental qualification tests. The company said the weapon defeated reinforced concrete more than one metre thick while maintaining its trajectory through the target.

Developed and manufactured by EDGE subsidiary LAHAB, the munition is intended for hardened targets and bunkers. It is designed to work with aircraft and precision guidance kits already compatible with the MK 82 General Purpose munition.

“We have introduced a new application specific product that expands the end-user’s capabilities while maintaining familiarity and ease of use,” said Mohammed Arbabi, LAHAB’s chief executive officer. “Designed for hardened reinforced targets/bunkers, it delivers greater flexibility and enhanced capability without introducing unnecessary complexity.”

Tests assessed penetration and environmental performance

The development programme concluded with a test campaign assessing penetration against a range of hardened target types. The weapon also completed a sequence of environmental qualification tests.

EDGE said trials demonstrated no “J” effect. The munition therefore held its trajectory through the target rather than deviating on impact.

Compatibility extends to existing MK 82 platforms

EDGE said the Penetrator is compatible with NATO-configuration aircraft across generations and roles, including fourth-, 4.5- and fifth-generation fighters. It also supports variable-geometry strike aircraft, advanced jet trainers, light attack platforms and any aircraft already cleared for the MK 82 General Purpose munition.

The weapon can use existing MK 82 precision guidance kits, including EDGE’s AL TARIQ and THUNDER families. According to the company, this allows operators to add hardened-target capability to a guided weapon already in service without introducing a separate guidance chain.

MK 83 Penetrator development continues

The MK 82 is the first of two variants described in the programme, with the MK 83 Penetrator at an advanced stage of development. Both form part of LAHAB’s broader effort to establish domestic munition development, qualification and manufacturing capabilities for the UAE and its partners.
