Egypt has requested an unspecified number of these radar systems to enhance its air defence capabilities. The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated that the proposed sale aims to improve Egypt’s ability to detect and respond to aerial threats.
According to the DSCA, Egypt already operates a range of radar systems and is expected to integrate the new equipment into its armed forces without difficulty. The approval does not mean the contract has been finalised, as further negotiations between Egypt and the US defence industry are required.
The AN/TPS-78 is an S-band air surveillance radar designed for detecting and tracking airborne and maritime targets. It has a maximum range of 240 nautical miles (444 kilometres/276 miles), making it suitable for long-range air defence and surveillance operations.
The system includes a tracking subsystem with automatic detection capabilities and provides updates every 10 or 5 seconds, optimising it for ground control intercept missions and tactical ballistic missile tracking. Its mobility allows it to be transported via cargo planes, helicopters, trucks, and trains, providing operational flexibility.
Northrop Grumman is the principal contractor for the potential sale.
